Sometimes you taste
the butterscotch in sunlight.
It pours down indiscriminately
so, of course, a ray or two
may slip into your mouth.
And that rose tree–
so densely pink and all abloom–
that too sends out a flavor
that falls easily on your tongue.

On walks around the neighborhood
the dogs swish their tails
in good humor. They lie
on the warm fringe of lawns
in front of other people’s houses,
giving no thought to property rights
or boundaries, so it’s only natural
their lack of concern
should rub off on you,
giving you time to taste the sunlight
and savor the peppermint essence
of roses in full bloom.
