We humans have landed on a comet
via a clever little probe that grabbed
onto a speeding bullet, so to speak,
and refused to let go.

Now we hear sounds through
our surrogate ears—
eerie whooshing sounds.
What can they be?
Are they the sounds of time,
speaking to us, telling us stories
encoded in our DNA that we’ve
never been able to decipher?
Or are they the susurrant remnants
of voices lost to the ages,
speaking in a rush
in their eagerness to be heard?

Maybe one day we’ll know–
know everything,
understand everything,
even the language of the cosmos.
Imagine the stories it will tell!
