i wished for a dream of you
but all i got was a kibble in my shoe
i don’t mean to be ungrateful
for a clue is a clue
but how i wished for a dream of you

don’t you love the starkness
of a black and white photo
of color stripped away
to show the underlying essence
of whatever you may call it
a soul
a spirit
a suggestion
of something long forgotten
that nevertheless
remains encoded
in the depths
of our knowing

i woke up from a dream
the dream was you
how was i to know i was dreaming
all along
how was i to know that soon
you’d be gone
life is a delusion the sages say
perhaps we are all dreaming our life away
but if this is so i want you to know
i love that dream
i can’t let it go

it’s all so difficult now learning to live without you:
you who were once a very part of my soul
i used to feel your presence everywhere
i needed you near
now that i’m alone your absence is a presence
and it hurts to know that even as time passes
and i’ve grown accustomed to this new life
there will always be moments that catch me unawares
and i will then know the full weight of my burden:
the everlasting presence of your goodbye
