it seems like only for a moment
we were close to the sun
now like little planets we drift
farther and farther away and apart
each following its predestined path
to eternity

do you ever half awaken just before dawn
when the sky is soft and the world is wide
when all that is past and all that is to come
are mere shadows under a restless sun
when for a moment peace is in the air
and your sunlit soul is free of care

the day begins in a lovely way
summer warmth on a winter day
the moon and sun have come to play
no need to think of yesterday
wear a smile for all to see
to chase away all misery
for today is quite a lovely day
no need to live for yesterday

she is the sunshine of sunshine
the one who will save me
from darkness within
shadows cease when she is near
and her warmth is like a memory
of the sand’s heated embrace
after a cold ocean swim
off a california beach
a memory that survives
from summers long ago

the last thing he gave me
was a small jar of honey from his beehive
this is it in the picture
the sweetness of honey the sting of bees
not a bad way to remember him by
though i exaggerate some
it wasn’t like we were lovers or even friends
he was someone i almost knew
it was just the promise that was there
i suppose like a flower
in keeping with the honey bee metaphor
he was a flower i gazed upon
his beauty was that alluring
and his body and his regard moved in concert
with a warm spirit so like the sun
his name was george and wherever he is
wherever the sun finds him
for the kindness he showed me
for this jar of honey
i wish him well

she flies high on a mushroom cloud
of dreams
tenderly sunlight settles on a landscape
of hope
night flowers disrobe despairing
of moonlight
birds of the morning sing songs
of release
to stop the earth from spinning
long enough
for her to wake
to breathe
to be

I did nothing and it was
everything I’d hoped it would be.
I didn’t go to work.
I didn’t read or exercise.
I didn’t watch TV either
or go see the latest blockbuster
(and though the movie would signify
nothing, it would still count as something).
I didn’t go on facebook—well,
I never go on facebook—but
I didn’t go on wordpress either.
No, I just looked out the window
and let my thoughts gather
and disperse with the light.
I watched it slide across
rooftops, sift through trees, and
turn the leaves into a shade
I have no name for.
I watched it fall brightly on
wet sidewalks and watered lawns.
I even watched it darken and fade
with the dying day.
And though in the end I can’t say
I ever saw the light, I sure
did watch the hell out of it!
